To consider how we live is to consider architecture. If the basic desire for shelter gave rise to the field, housing remains one of architects’ primary concerns today. Multiple levels cross in the design of a residence: providing comfort, exploring novel materials, honoring memory, and transforming culture. As a result, visualizing the synthesis of the modern home is a significant problem. We cooperated with Ulises Design Studio to study how Artificial Intelligence (AI) views the contemporary home in the context of 15 various countries in quest of new insights. The images that arise from data that touches on facts of reality and fiction can provide inspiration and crucial thoughts on spatial practice and the creation of its images.
Working with AI software that generates images based on commands, such as Midjourney or DALL-E, enables for the development of various techniques based on each tool’s mathematical data. It is critical to the conclusion of an image to design a specific dataset, input precise coordinates, and alter or add items in post-production. With this in mind, we began our research by asking, “How does artificial intelligence perceive the modern home?”
Without a clear rule, the initial stage in the research was to enter the following suggestion into Midjourney: “/imagine: contemporary house showcased on archdaily website.” As a result, images with highly identical language and only minor differences in materials and context appeared.
This homogenization occurs as a result of the database’s prevalent architectural styles, from which the software develops a pattern through identification or classifications made during training. For example, the picture dataset may observe that most dwellings published on ArchDaily have two storeys, orthogonal lines, with common functions on the ground floor and a more private zone with huge window openings on the upper level. These standard features generate the pattern that the software follows in order to adhere to the specified image. Excluding other architectural concepts, techniques, and materials that could be used in a modern home.
